If your child is receiving the First Rite of Reconciliation, it will just be the priest and your child involved in the ceremony. If your child is receiving the Second Rite of Reconciliation, it will be the priest, the community and your child, but your child will still be able to confess individually. Here are the roles the parties play:
The role of the priest is to
Welcome the person in a friendly way, for Jesus loves everyone
Listen to what the person has to say
Encourage the person to say ‘sorry’ to Jesus for their sins
Forgive the person
The priest is not allowed to share what has been told to him under any circumstances. The Sacrament of Reconciliation is completed in total confidence.
The role of the penitent is to
Think about what they have done wrong, tell the priest, listen to his advice and then pray for forgiveness.
The role of the community is to
Listen to the word of God and reflect together on where and how they have fallen short of their baptismal commitment to follow Christ.
